As stated in Alberta Education’s Teacher Quality Standard document, teachers who hold a Permanent Professional Certificate must demonstrate that they “understand the subject disciplines they teach” (Ministerial Order #016/97, 1997).
I believe that I demonstrate this through the following:
- I have gained a wealth of knowledge and skills through my Bachelor of Education, Master of Education, extensive professional development/other training and work/personal life experiences, that allow me to teach effectively in a variety of subject areas and grades.
- I have (or can access) the required background knowledge to teach the subjects and content/skill areas that I am assigned.
- I use a variety of resources to ensure that students are getting a rich and diverse learning experience.
- I always prepare myself prior to teaching any particular content or skill that I am less familiar with, and use resources to support me. For example, prior to teaching curling to my grade 7’s, 8’s and 9’s, I accessed the rules via the internet, watched YouTube videos that demonstrated various skills and components of curling, and set up walking field trips to a curling rink, where students could get assistance from experienced curlers.
